POEM BY EOGHAN HOWARD – TIME BANK MEMBER

WESTER HAILES

1969

We headed West with all the rest
Towards the hill of promise
Stark new horizons all around
And highs and lows before us

Enthused by hope
We settled down
To what seemed most important
Whatever what the planners thought
Commuter land it wasn’t

1970 s

So very soon initial doubts
No buses, shops or schools
With dampened hopes, but spirit high
We fought to change the rules

The powers that were and sought to be
May not have been to pleased
But people power had won the hour
And some injustice eased

1980 s

Enthused by hope
We settled down
To what felt most important

And set up local projects here
But this time independent

Real progress started to take shape
With jobs and training schemes

Attracting interest from elsewhere
And copied too it seems

1990 s
How best to take this further now
Was seen in the next stage

In partnership we placed our trust
And how we would engage

A quick success this proved to ne
With funding to the fore
And 18 multistories
New housing and much more

2000 s

In time though further doubts arose
As to the longer vision
With partners losing interest fast
Before a fulfilled mission

Local groups they seemed to think
Would take up all the slack
But funding cuts put paid to that
With closures back to back

Local groups, they seemed to think
Would take up all the slack
But funding put paid to that
With closures back to back

2010 s

Enthused by hope, we settled down
To what feels most important
Rebuilding what had been removed
To do what planners doesn’t

So yet again initial thoughts
Are turning to the future
But this time learning from the past
A hill of promise featured

LAST POEM BY PAULA BAIN

PLANT LIFE

To disappear so suddenly, you come up with a haze of bubbles

Your green body reflects the sunshine

Beating down on your croak you stare at

The water lily jump,jump

Your skinny legs they move so fast

You have to find some algae at last

Mouth fill eyes that bulge its time for you to snooze

Underneath your water lily so still like night

And you can wake again so bright

You must fight with other predators to have your right

Your life is short but not in vain

For you spawn your young to live again
